Remember, praise in public, reprimand in private. But you knew that, right? Just a friendly reminder from your coach.
Of course, it’s not quite that simple. As you know, leadership is sometimes a matter of “different strokes for different folks,” and there are plenty of people who cringe when they’re being publicly praised. These folks will tell you they’d love the pat on the back – but would prefer to receive it privately.
And there will be situations where’s its necessary to address an elephant in the room with the whole team participating in the process.
But in general, it’s rarely a mistake to give folks recognition in the presence of others, and to create a private, confidential setting when your message might be met with resistance, apprehension, or denial.
